In Edinburgh where the tattoo scene is thriving, it can be overwhelming to choose where to go and what artist to choose from. The city offers a diverse array of artists who specialise in different styles, catering to all who want to get Inked.

Eleni Tzemos, a 21-year-old with over 100 tattoos to her name, embodies the spirit of Edinburgh’s lively tattoo culture. Embracing gothic and witchy aesthetics, Eleni shares her experience through the city’s tattoo landscape, offering her expertise.

When asked about Edinburgh's distinct tattoo scene, Eleni emphasises its diversity and creativity. "It's a truly free space," she declares, where artists thrive on experimentation and innovation.

For visitors eager to explore Edinburgh's tattoo offerings, Eleni offers sage advice: "Do your research and ask locals". Avoid clichéd symbols such as the flower of Scotland the thistle.

“Choosing a tattoo artist and studio is a significant decision that can greatly influence the outcome of your tattoo”. From Watermelon to Sanctuary body art, Eleni assesses each establishment based on artistic skill, atmosphere, and progressiveness, guiding fellow ink enthusiasts towards reputable artists and welcoming environments.

Watermelon Tattoo Studio: 📍14-15 E Norton Pl, Edinburgh EH7 5DR

Eleni rates the artists in watermelon highly for their skills, giving them a 7 out of 10. The studio’s atmosphere receives a perfect 10, acknowledging its welcoming and creative environment. Eleni commends Watermelon for its progressiveness, scoring a sold 10, she also remarks that if she were to get another tattoo it would be here.

Sanctuary Body Art: 📍2b Pirrie St, Edinburgh EH6 5HY

Next on Eleni’s list is Sanctuary Body Art, where she praises Liz Minelli and Kristian Astell. With perfect scores all around, this studio has both exceptional artistic skills but also a positive environment. Their progressive approach to tattooing also earns it a 10, as they emphasise creativity and encourage collaboration.

Sanatorium: 📍8 Drummond St, Edinburgh EH8 9TU

While Eleni appreciates the artistic talent at Sanatorium giving it a 8 out of 10, she rates the studio lower in terms of progressiveness and atmosphere, giving both a score of 2. She believes there are talented tattoo artists there however it lacks the willingness to embrace change.

Reflecting on my journey, which is much shorter than Eleni’s, I have always gone back to Okey Dokey. Three artists from there have left their mark on my skin.

Okey Dokey: 📍19 Bread St, Edinburgh EH3 9AL

Diana Pikus tattooed my ankle with a detailed forget-me-not and etched a fine line coordinated onto my ribs. Both tattoos came out well and have stayed fresh. She has a quiet demeanour which was good as i was getting my ribs done.

Next was Tomy Jack, he tattooed a word in bold on my arm. He was friendly and reassuring which puts you at ease while he works.

After a friend's recommendation, I had the pleasure of meeting Zen O’Conor, who has quickly become my go-to tattoo artist. With Zen, I entrusted the creation of a fine line tattoo depicting a bikini on a washing line on my arm, trust me it’s cute. He was calming and paid close attention to detail which is crucial for delicate fine line work.
