His journey from being a teacher to a tattoo artist in Edinburgh, swapping paint for ink, is one worth hearing. Zen O'Conor's transition to his current profession is one of self-discovery and creativity.

Zen’s journey into becoming a tattoo artist is a story of passion. From teaching workshops to becoming a sought-after tattoo artist, the journey started during the pandemic when a friend suggested he try tattooing. Taking the leap, he sent in his portfolio to studios in Edinburgh. Okey Dokey offered him an apprenticeship and he has been working there ever since. Zen: “It’s been an incredible journey, and I feel like I've found my true passion”.

He has always had an artistic flair as before his tattooing days he lived in Florence training in 19th-century academic painting techniques. “I learned the concepts of light and form, the idea of breaking visual elements into their component parts, and the importance of attention to detail”.

Armed with a unique blend of traditional artistry with a touch of modernism, Zen found it easier to slip into his role as a tattoo artist. “These skills have translated well into my tattoo work, helping me create compositions that work on the skin and refine designs”.

Collaborating with clients is one of Zen’s favourite aspects of the job. Drawing from his experience as a teacher, he is a social character. “I love working with clients on both large and small pieces. My social skills from teaching have become very important in understanding and interacting with various personalities to help realize their vision. Regardless of the design, it makes me extremely happy to create memories that will last a lifetime”.

He pulls inspiration from a diverse range of artists to help develop his artistic style, which is always evolving. He cites Kozo and other realist artists from New York studios as major inspirations. Their unparalleled skill and creativity leave him in awe, pushing him to constantly elevate his craft. Additionally, he draws inspiration from lowbrow artists like Kaws and Banksy, whose simple yet powerful designs blend pop culture with everyday themes.

Despite having only tattooed for a few years, he is already making waves with a distinct approach. With a background in drawing and painting, he gravitates to more organic designs such as flowers and animals. He finds joy in smaller pieces that require a lot of focus due to meticulous detail. However, he doesn’t shy away from larger projects such as full sleeves.

What makes the Edinburgh tattoo scene stand out, according to Zen “The Edinburgh tattoo scene attracts artists from various cultural backgrounds, which is reflected in the diverse range of work produced. The heavy competition pushes studios to innovate and artists to stay at the top of their game”. It's a place where boundaries are pushed, and new ideas flourish, creating an environment that's as exciting as it is welcoming.

Looking ahead, Zen sees nothing but growth and opportunity for the tattoo industry in Edinburgh. “I don't see the tattoo industry in Edinburgh slowing down anytime soon. With increasing demand, there's pressure on studios and artists to produce high-quality work. Advancements in technology and new art influences are changing the public's perception of tattooing as an art form, attracting enthusiasts of all ages. It's an exciting time to be a part of this evolving industry”.
