Soft Soul Studio: Redefining The Tattoo Experience In Edinburgh

In the heart of the busy vibrant tattoo community in Edinburgh lies a studio unlike any other- Soft Soul Studio. Here Natalia also known as Lunar Witch on social media, has created more than just a place to get a tattoo, it’s a place where everybody is celebrated, and every soul finds solace.

Natalia always knew she wanted to open their own tattoo studio to create a studio away from the intimidating atmosphere often associated with tattoo parlours. She never felt quite at home within the community as it is dominated by men who look like they listen to heavy metal music, “I always felt like a soft soul”. In a community where being tough and edgy seemed to be prerequisites for acceptance, Natalia wanted to carve out a space where regardless of gender, sexuality, or aesthetic preferences, you would feel welcomed and embraced.

Natalia noticed a lack of inclusive spaces for members of the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities and those with mental health issues. Determined to fill this void, she created a studio where everyone feels seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are. “I just truly want to celebrate everybody and help people celebrate their bodies too through adding beautiful art on it”.

Natalia also made the studio accessible for all, “The studio is fully wheelchair accessible also with a fully disabled bathroom and there is a big space for people to move around in whereas in most Tattoo studios there would be some sort of obstruction for people in wheelchairs. I always make sure that there aren’t more than two people tattooing at the same time if I have a guest artist just to ensure we do have the extra space and comfort for everybody”.

This commitment to inclusivity extends to those with visible scars, including self-harm scars, who often face stigma and discrimination in traditional tattoo parlours. “I have clients with self-harm scars, and they had been refused service as they didn’t want their designs on their skin. I work with the client individually and I educate them on the risks that come with tattoo self-harm scares and then I can do the best tattoo for their skin”.

“Also, I offer silent appointments for those people experiencing anxiety or someone who just doesn’t want to talk during their appointment, they are welcome to request a silent appointment with no questions Asked no judgment”.

Beyond its welcoming atmosphere, Soft Soul Studio is leading the charge in eco-conscious tattooing.” The studio is also fully vegan and environmentally conscious because the tattooing process can create a lot of plastic waste as artists try to save money by buying cheap plastic single-use materials.”

Sourcing eco-friendly tattoo supplies in Edinburgh hasn't been easy. “With only a few companies offering these products their limited availability means you must buy as many supplies as you can before they sell out. It is less profitable, but I care more about the planet than money”. Their commitment to the planet is as steadfast as their dedication to their craft.

Natalia also holds events like moon circles and journaling sessions, providing a supportive environment for clients to explore their bodies, express themselves, and find support from others.

Hopes for the future “I want to do more event-style things for people and collaborate with other people in Edinburgh. I do think the studio will always be a work in process. We have only been open for more years and it’s already incredibly successful. I am very much looking forward to helping the community and just doing tattoos on very cool people”.
