Edinburgh is a city filled with tales and rich history, but there is a lot more to uncover than legends of the castle and cobblestoned streets. The past of tattoos in Edinburgh goes deeper than one might expect. From the mighty Picts to today’s contemporary ink, Edinburgh’s tattoo history is a long one, that left its permanent mark on the city.

The journey begins with the Picts, a tribe known for being fearless warriors in battle but also for the ink that traced their skin. They carved their art onto stones, mostly etchings of symbols and animals but they didn’t stop there. The Picts were heavily tattooed sometimes head to toe. Marking their bodies with symbols of animals and nature was a testament to their own identity and beliefs, not unlike us today.

During medieval times, Edinburgh was a target for Viking raids, these raids didn’t bring destruction alone but new ideas. Different concepts were exchanged including tattoo practices. Celtic culture influenced new tattoo designs, due to its tradition of body art which dates back centuries. These designs symbolised strength, bravery, and achievements in battle.

With a surge of more tattoo studios opening and talented artists, body art grew within the city’s streets. Popular styles of traditional Celtic knots and intricate designs inspired by Scotland’s roots signified our heritage. Alongside these traditional designs was a new wave of tattoo designs such as vibrant watercolours and many more. Past and present came together in a celebration of artistic expression. Today, Edinburgh stands out as a place where tattoo culture is celebrated and enjoyed.
